Family of Joseph Eve - Virginia & Kentucky.


First Generation


1 Joseph Eve

Joseph Eve was born in England in about 1718. He died in Virginia in early 1770.

He married Mary Howard (?) who was born about 1722. It is believed she died in 1770. They had the following children.

  • Joseph Eve (2) - born about 1740.. He died before 1770. He arried Ann (Nancy).
  • Thomas Eve (3) - born about 1750. He died after 1770
  • John Eve - born about 1750. He died atfer 1770
  • George Eve (4) - born 1748. He died in 1819. He married Elizabeth Johnson.
  • Sarah Eve (5) - born about 1750. She died after 1770.

1718 to 1732 - Joseph Eve in London

In April 1732 Joseph Eaves (sic) and John Oaks allegedly stole a pewter sign, valued at 15 shillings, the goods of Jarvis Barker. At their trial in May 1732, Joseph was found guilty and sentenced to transportation. Oaks was acquitted.

1732 - Transported to USA.

Records show Joseph being transported from Newgate Prison to Virginia on the Caesar under Captain William Loney. He and the rest of the 117 passengers were received on board on the 26th of October, 1732.

1732 to 1736 -Servant to David Kingcade

Joseph Eve was a servant to James Kincade for a period of three years.

1736 - Freedom

Under the headrigh systen a person was entitled to 50 acres of land if they remained in Virginia for a period of 3 years.

Joseph Eve presented his discharge in Sept in 1736 in Orange County.

1740 to 1770

In 1741 he and his wife, Mary, were leased land by Thomas Chew at the Southwest Mountains, on the south side of Chew's Mill Run,

He also leased land from Benjamin Cave on the fork of the Rapidan River in 1745.

There references to Joseph Eve's activities in Orange County order books which show him;

  • He was a joiner - he undertook construction work for the St. Mark Parish and on other churches.
  • He received payment for building stocks in 1750. - To JOSEPH EVE for building a pair of Stocks and Pillory 500

He died in early 1770. He left his property to his wife and his children, Thomas, John, George and Sarah and the children of his deceased son, Joseph (Betty and Sarah).George was bequeathed his still.


Second Generation


2 Joseph Eve

Joseph Eve was born in Vrginia in about 1740. He died before 1770.

He married Ann (Nancy ) in about 1760. They had the following children

  • Elizabeth (Betty) Eve (6) - born 26th Feb 1762 in Virginia. She married Lewis Carlton on 13th Jan 1781 in Wilkes County, North Carolina.
  • Sarah Eve (7) - born 1764 in Virginia. She married Thomas Bell on the 16th Sept 1788 in Wilkes County, North Carolina

There are details of Joseph Eve's wfe in census data.

  • 1782 Census - records show a Haney Eve Orange County, Continental Census - index ref VAS1a1035640. The census shows a (H)Nancy with 6 in the family. By this date his daugther Elizabeth had married - who are the others in the household?
  • 1785 Census - records show an Ann with 6 in the family.

There may have been other children

  • Marriage records for 22nd December 1785 record the marriage of a Mary Eve, daughter of Ann to a Julius Watts in Orange County.


3 Thomas Eve

Thomas Eve was born about 1750 in Virginia. He died after 1770.

I have no details of a marriage or children.

Thomas Eve is listed as a taxpayer in Culpeper for 1728-87..

There is a record in the Virginia Herald published In Fredrickberg relating to a courtcase on the 8th Aug 1810 (page 3 col 4).

In case at the Spotsylvania County Court, Thomas Eve was named as a defendant and described as an administrator of Sally Eve. The plaintiff was a William Ordy? He did not appear.


4 Reverend George Eve

Reverend George Eve was born in 1748 in Culpeper, Virginia. He died in Oct 1819 in Scott Co, Kentucky.

He married: Elizabeth Johnson on the 21st Dec 1778. She was born on the 5th Jan 1757 in Orange Co, Virginia. She died on the 13th Aug 1832 in Knox Co, Kentucky.

They had the following children;

  • William Joseph Eve (8) - born: 13th Sept 1773 in Culpeper Co, Virginia. He died on the 20th Mar 1804 in Fayette, Kentucky. He married Clarrisa Kirtley on 24th December 1795.
  • George Eve Jr (9) - born 2nd Mar 1775 in Culpeper Co, Virginia. He died on the 30th May 1861 in Neward, Missouri.
  • John Eve - born 1777 in Culpeper Co, Virginia. He died in : 1809 in Scott Co, Virginia.
  • Thomas E Eve - born 1779 in Culpeper, Virginia. He died in 1830 in Culpeper, Virginia. He married ied Fanny Jenkins (born 1784) on the 18th March 1805 in St Thomas Parish, Orange Co, Virginia.
  • Joseph L Eve (10) - born 1781 Culpeper, Virginia. He died in 1842 in Galveston, Texas.
  • Elizabeth Eve (11) - born 6th Jan 1783 in Culpeper, Virginia. She died on the 10th Aug 1824 in Clinton Co, Missouri.
  • Jabez Eve - born 1785 in Culpeper, Virginia.
  • Benjamin Eve (12) - born 1789 Culpeper, Virginia. He died on the 24th Oct 1860 in Knox Co, Kentucky.
  • Joshua Eve - born 1790 Culpeper, Virginia. He died in 1830.:
  • John Gill Eve (13) - born 28th Aug 1793 in Culpeper, Virginia. He died in 1841 in Knox Co, Kentucky.
  • Mary Howard Polly Eve (14) - born about 1795 in Culpeper, Virginia.
  • Newton Eve - born 1797 in : Culpeper, Virginia.

Elizabeth Johnson was the daughter of Capt William Johnson and Elizabeth Cave. George Eve who became a minister was born in Virginia but moved to Kentucy in 1797.

Arnold Taylor writes based on Spencer's History of Kentucky Baptists, supra, Vol.I,

He was "raised an Episcopalian, but under the preaching of the renowned David Thomas, he was converted and joined the Baptists in 1772. He soon began to exhort, and, in 1778, was ordained to the ministry. He took charge of F.T. church" and then Blue Run in Orange County. For a number of years he preached with great success. In 1797 he moved to Kentucky and settled in what is now Boone County, but was then Campbell County. Bullittsburg Baptist Church had been established in June of 1794 and he went there, preaching there for about three years. In 1800 he went to what is now Franklin County and joined Great Crossing Church. Very active, he preached almost full time, and on 2 May 1801 he helped constitute North Fork church, located near his residence.

Some key events of his life are set out below;

  • 1769 - Rapid-Ann Church formed George Eve and his sister Sarah Eve were members.
  • 1787- George Eve is listed as a taxpayer in Culpeper.
  • 1792 - Between 1781 and 1792 he performed 97 marriages in Culpeper between 1781 and 1792.
  • 1797 - Up to 1800 he was a minister in Bullittsburg Baptist Church
  • 1797/8 -He appears as a Campbell County, Kentucky taxpayer in 1797.
  • 1800 - Listed as a Scott County resident in the 1800 Kentucky Census.
  • 1810 - He is listed in the Scott County census.
  • 1816 - Excluded (due to drink) from North Fork. He was restored and preached again, but fell once more and was again expelled, in 1817.
  • 1819 - He dies.

5 Sarah Eve

Sarha Eve was born about 1750 in Virginia. She died after 1770.

Little is known of Sarah Eve - see reference to George Eve (4) regarding membership of a chapel in 1769.

A Sarah Eve (7) married in 1788 - It is possible that it is Sarah Eve (5) that married in this date

There is reference to a court case in 1822 in the Virginia Herald (13th Feb page 3 col 5) involving a Sarah Eve.
